Sleep ranks high on the priority list of self-care, often followed by diet and exercise.  If you are struggling with insomnia, you may have tried many solutions without success. When insomnia arrives, nights and days may run together. You may find it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep, and days may be blurred with sleepiness that makes work impossible, leaving you cranky and irritable.  Harvard Health psychologists say nearly half of insomnia causes are believed to be psychological or emotional, such as mild depression, stress, or anxiety. When the causes are treated, the insomnia usually goes away.

Unfortunately, many people suffer from chronic insomnia without solving the problem. Prescription sleep aids can be helpful, but also has side effects; dependency on medication can lead to addiction.  As each night approaches, anxiety heightens at even the slightest possibility of another sleepless night.  Normal routines may collapse, and sleep becomes an agonizing obsession.

Restricting sleep is a new technique that may help to solve insomnia. Sleep experts suggest limiting sleep to six hours, gradually adding more hours as sleep improves.  They suggest setting the alarm for 7 a.m., and not going to bed until 1 a.m. Once the six hours are established with sound sleep, 15- to 30-minute segments can be added. This process can be continued, gradually moving the amount of sleep up to 7 or 8 hours.
