Suffering from a Pinched Nerve?

We experience the phrase “pinched nerve” often as chiropractors. Many patients visit us after diagnosis by a physician with a pinched nerve and present significant pain and distress. A pinched nerve can produce signs and symptoms.

Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve

  • Neck Pain
  • Headaches
  • Mid or Lower Back Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Radiating pain down the arms or legs
  • Numbness, tingling, and/or burning sensation in the arms, hands, legs and toes

Patients with a pinched nerve may also experience limited motion in their back and neck, difficulty standing or sitting for extended periods, bending, twisting, and sleeping. Irritated or pinched nerves may also cause muscle spasms and discomfort. Because we depend on our spinal nerves to coordinate the operation of the rest of our organs, nerves that have been pinched may also affect the functioning of our internal systems.

Four Causes of a “Pinched Nerve”

  • Subluxation or Spinal Misalignment- Our spinal column is composed of 24 movable bones or vertebrae. These vertebrae should line up and move freely in all directions with the bones above and below. A subluxation is a misalignment of one of these vertebrae that puts pressure on and irritates the nerve exiting the spine at that level. This nerve irritation can cause pain and muscle spasms.
  • Disc Degeneration- Spinal discs separate the vertebrae of the spinal column. They act as cushions or shock absorbers, allowing for sufficient room in the vertebrae for spinal nerves to leave the spine. If a spinal subluxation or an unnatural misalignment of the vertebrae results in a spine that does not function correctly, these tissues begin to dry out and deteriorate.
  • Osteoarthritis- Osteoarthritis refers to a form of arthritis that usually affects the weight-bearing joints of the spinal column, including the spine’s intervertebral foramina. Osteoarthritis typically spreads to the intervertebral foramina, putting pressure on the nerves in the spinal column.
  • Disc Protrusion or Disc Herniation- The intervertebral disc is a structure found between vertebrae of the spine. The disc contains 2 parts: the annulus fibrosis, which is the fibrous outer area, and the nucleus pulposus, which is the gellike center. These discs serve as shock absorbers and provide more space between the vertebrae for the nerves to leave the spine. The membrane will create a bulge in the matter of the spine when there’s heightened or inconsistent pressure. If that occurs, a nuclear hernia may push away from the outer wall of the sacrum, compromising the neural passageway that the nerve requires to leave the spinal twine.

Treatment of Pinched Nerves With Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that focuses on treating the musculoskeletal system. This type of care can be helpful in treating pinched nerves. A pinched nerve occurs when there is compression or pressure on a nerve. This can happen due to a herniated disc, bone spur, or other condition. Symptoms of a pinched nerve include pain, numbness, and tingling. Chiropractic care can help to reduce the pressure on the nerve and relieve symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms of a pinched nerve, talk to your doctor or a chiropractor at our Belleville back pain clinic today.

What Happens When a Pinched Nerve Goes Untreated?

There are many reasons why a nerve can get pinched, such as spinal misalignments (subluxations), degeneration of the spinal discs, a herniated disc, or a combination of all these factors. If this nerve remains untreated or isn’t properly taken care of, symptoms are likely to worsen as time passes. When spinal joints that are misaligned are not moving properly, they will start to degenerate. Our goal at The Back Pain Clinic is to find and correct the underlying cause of conditions like pinched nerves to alleviate our patients from their pain but also to maintain their spine’s proper alignment in order to avoid degenerative changes in the future.
